ABE programmes are business orientated and share some common subjects thus giving students flexibility of choice. Students may, if they wish, complete more than one programme at the same time.

The ABE programmes offer four steams

  • Business Administration (BA)
  • Business Information Systems (BIS)
  • Travel, Tourism and Hospitality (TTH)
  • Practitioners Programme in Human Resource Management (HRM)

Progression route to Bachelor and MBA degrees

ABE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Certificate Programmes

No formal qualifications are required but applicants must demonstrate competence in the English language by the attainment of one of the following (or equivalent):

  • British Council - Intermediate Certificate in English / Upper Advanced Certificate in English.
  • LCCI - English for Business (EFB) 1 st or 2 nd level. Pitman / City & Guilds - English for Speakers of Other languages (ESOL) / English for Business Communications.
  • RSA (OCR) - English language Stage 11.
  • Confirmation by their college of equivalent standard in the use of English. The decision of Council as to the suitability of the candidate shall be final.

Diploma Programmes

Applicants should be recommended by two responsible persons. They must also have attained one of the following entry requirements:

  • ABE Certificate.
  • Two GCE 'A' levels together with four GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English language and Maths.
  • BTEC National award in relevant subjects.
  • Three passes in LCCI Third level in relevant subjects.
  • Four passes in RSA examinations at least two of which must be at Stage 111.
  • Pitman's Qualifications - Two passes at level 3 in relevant subjects.
  • An 'Access' Certificate from a UK College of Further Education .
  • Any NCVQ approved qualifications at level 3 in relevant subjects.
  • Such overseas qualifications which following University of London guidelines may be accepted by the Registrar as being equivalent to the above.

In addition, the ABE welcomes applications for student membership from intending Diploma candidates who, although not holding a formal entry qualification, have been in appropriate employment for at least two years. A reference letter from employers must accompany such an application.

Advance Diploma Programmes

Applicants must have attained one of the following entry qualifications:

  • ABE Diploma.
  • A degree awarded by a recognised UK or overseas University.
  • Other recognised qualifications of approved overseas Institutions of Higher Education.

    80 study hours should be devoted to each subject.

Diploma Part 1

Diploma Part 2

  • Human Resources Management
  • Quantitative Methods
  • Managerial Accounting

Plus one selection from the following:

  • Principles of Business Law
  • Systems Analysis
  • 120 study hours should be devoted to each subject

Advanced Diploma

  • Corporate Strategy
  • International Business (Case Study)
  • Management Organisation


Plus two selections from the following options:

  • Strategic Human Resources Management
  • Corporate Finance
  • Strategic Marketing
  • Managing Information Resource
  • 150 study hours should be devoted to each subject

Business Information Systems Programme (BIS)

Diploma Part 1

The three compulsory papers are:

1. Computer Fundamentals
2. Computer Applications in Business and Finance
3. Business Communication.

Students must also pass one of the following subjects:

4. Organisational Behaviour (Management Pathway)
5. Accounting (Finance Pathway

Diploma Part 2

The four compulsory papers are:

1. Principles of Programming
2. Networks and Distributed Systems
3. Quantitative Methods
4. Systems Analysis

Students must also pass one of the following subjects:

5. Human Resource Management (Management Pathway)
6. Managerial Accounting (Finance Pathway)

Advanced Diploma
The four compulsory papers are:

1. Contemporary Application Development Methods
2. Managing Systems Change
3. Relational Database Applications in Business
4. Internet Systems Development

Students must also pass one of the following subjects:

6. Corporate Finance (Finance Pathway)

Travel, Tourism and Hospitality (TTH)

Certificate

3. Tourism and the Environment

Students must also pass two of the following subjects:

6. Strategic Human Resource Management
7. Managing the Information Resource

Practitioners Programme in Human Resource Management (HRM)

The programme consists of a Certificate and a Diploma, each comprising four subjects. Students will be sent a scroll upon completion of the Certificate but will not be awarded the Diploma until they have passed all eight subjects.

Practitioners Certificate in Human Resource Management

Four compulsory subjects

1. Introduction to Business (common subject with ABE Business Administration programme)
2. Introduction to Business Communication (common subject with Business Administration)
3. Managing People
4. Personnel Administration

Practitioners Diploma in Human Resource Management

Four compulsory subjects

1.Business Communication and Presentation (common subject with Business Administration)
2. Organisational Behaviour (common subject with Business Administration)
3. Human Asset Management
4. Human Resource Development

Standard

The Certificate in HRM is set and marked to A level standard.

The Diploma in HRM is set and marked to the standard of the first year of a UK Business Studies degree.

However, it should be noted that the Diploma in HRM consists of four subjects and is therefore comparable to Diploma Part 1 of the Business Administration programme.
