Introduction
Gaining recognition with BTEC Higher Nationals
BTEC Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) have long been the qualifications of choice for students wishing to study in their specialism at Higher Education level. BTEC HNDs are studied by over 60 000 people per annum in universities, higher education institutions and colleges in the UK and in over 100 countries worldwide. Edexcel's BTEC Higher National qualifications are developed with and for industry, therefore meeting the needs of employers. It is this that has led to BTEC Higher Nationals being so successful.
Crucially, successful BTEC Higher National graduates:
-
have the ability to progress into suitable employment in the workplace
-
can gain accreditation and valuable continuing professional development when in employment
-
are able to gain exemptions and progress onto Honours Degree programmes in relevant subjects
-
are able to apply for membership of professional bodies.
Progression to degree
Edexcel's academic and vocational qualifications allow students to progress to university in many countries. BTEC Higher Nationals are an ideal alternative progression route. There are many examples of students studying their BTEC Higher National locally before entering the second or even final year of a degree in another country, including the UK (for international students), USA and Australia.
In the UK students graduating from BTEC HND/HNC programmes are able to progress to honours degree programmes, but the requirements will vary according to the receiving institution.
For International students the following is a list of universities and Higher Education Institutes which have signed a memorandum of understanding with Edexcel stating that they will accept students with BTEC HNDs in Business, Computing or Electrical/Electronic Engineering on to the third year of a same subject 3-year degree programme:
University of Huddersfield
University College Northampton
Nottingham Trent University
University of Plymouth
University of Salford
Southampton Institute of Higher Education
(from August 05 Southampton Solent University)
University of the West of England
